In Memoriam: Adriaan van Oosterom

It is with very great sadness that I have to advise you that Adriaan van Oosterom died on Friday 26th April, aged 77 years.  Adriaan often attended ISCE conferences and was the Plenary Lecturer at the annual meeting in 2002 when it was held in the Netherlands to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Einthoven’s early publications on his string galvanometer and the human ECG. Adriaan was interested in many aspects of modelling cardiac electrical activity from the cellular level to the whole heart model, with respect to which he was one of the developers of ECGSIM used for simulation of the normal and abnormal ECG.  He presented his research at ISCE on several occasions. He often asked very piercing questions of speakers and indeed was fearless in his comments on presentations. He was also complimentary at times!  He was of great value to the jury in what is now the Jos Willems Early Investigator Competition, when his opinion was often different to those of others on the panel.   He was President of the International Society of Electrocardiology (ISE) from 2009 – 2011 and a member of the Council of ISE for many years. The world of Electrocardiology is much poorer for his passing. He is survived by his wife, three children, and one granddaughter.
